Don’t look just yet, but the Minnesota Twins are making a run at the AL Central title. And it looks like they may have a chance. Having won 7 of their last 8 games, the Twins have suddenly become a threat to the Detroit Tigers, who seemingly had a lock on this division throughout the entire course of the 2009 baseball season.
The Twins are catching on as of late, with contributions from the entire team. Their hitting, anchored by Joe Mauer, has been exceptional lately, and some reliable starting pitching from Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Kevin Slowey, and others, has suddenly brought the Minnesota Twins to the forefront of a playoff race.
This is quite interesting when you consider the dynamics of the situation. Justin Morneau, former AL MVP and 2009 All-Star, unfortunately saw an end to his season last week following an injury he sustained during play. The Twins without Morneau seemed virtually hopeless, when suddenly, an unexpected 6 game winning streak brought the Twins within just a few games as the Tigers lost concurrently.
Making things very interesting is the fact that Minnesota and Detroit will meet in Detroit for the final three games of the regular season. As it currently stands, the Twins sit 2.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers. However, that lead could easily be narrowed some more should the Twins do well against the White Sox and the lowly Royals before meeting with the Tigers.
It seemed that there were no legitimate divisional races in baseball. That’s all about to change.
