WHAT HAPPENED: Panthers forward Stephen Weiss, a former Plymouth Whaler, scored the tying goal at 8:13 of the third period and assisted on Bryan McCabe’s winner 40 seconds into overtime. The Wings had dominated the Panthers in the first 20 minutes but couldn’t score. Pavel Datsyuk knocked in his own rebound on a power play at 17:58 of the second to open the scoring. Henrik Zetterberg and Brian Rafalski assisted on the goal. Zetterberg has five goals and six assists in a five-game scoring streak. In the third, Weiss fanned on Nathan Horton’s centering pass, but knocked in the second chance inside the right post.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Panthers won for the first time (1-7-0) after trailing after two periods.
ON THE UPSIDE: The Wings outhit Florida, 20-5, in the first period, 39-23, overall. Forward Cory Stillman left about 8 minutes into the second period after absorbing a hit by Wings defenseman Brad Stuart.
ON THE DOWNSIDE: Wings speedster Darren Helm was 0-for-2 on breakaways, including a shorthanded try with less than 4 minutes left in the second period.
OH, THOSE GOALIES: Scott Clemmensen kept Florida in the game early, as the Wings outshot the Panthers, 11-2, in the first period and had an 8-1 advantage in scoring chances. Clemmensen finished with 39 saves.
OVERHEARD: “It’s good for the confidence,” Helm said of getting a couple of breakaway chances. “But at the same time, you gotta score.”… “We had more than enough chances. We didn’t have much puck luck,” said Wings coach Mike Babcock. “I like the way we played. We had good energy from our guys. D
